Ode to Good Ol' Red

Dear Ol' Red,

You were such a gentle loving soul
Accepted everyone you met
I didn't know you very long
but into "your pack" I went
And how you worked your way into the tiniest places of my heart I will never know
I'm pretty sure that your sweet, gentle love & that never-ending doggie smile were just a small part

We knew your time was short with us
The last few days you were here
We learned that your heart
Was no longer strong enough
It became so very clear to us
Just how hard you were fighting
Trying to stay strong
Not wanting to let go
You didn't want to leave us
You tried as hard as you could
The pain you were going through
We didn't have a clue
We knew we needed to release you
So into the Master's hands we let you go
But even to the end you showed
You're sweet & gentle love
And even gave us your sweet doggie smile
Forever I'll hold dear

So when you breathed your very last
We were right there by your side
We told you that we'd be ok
That it was ok for you to go
I whispered in your ear
Before your last heartbeat
That Kiley would meet you at the Rainbow Bridge
She'd help lead & guide you
To abundant fields of green
Fields for you to run & jump & play in
Where new friends you'd meet & play with
Adopted & rescued siblings from oh so long ago
We know you'll all be there together
And never a moment alone

At angels feet you rest
and sleep to their peaceful songs
Where you wake refreshed & painless
And your days are filled with play

Until we meet again my friend
Your memory I'll hold close
And thank God everyday
For the time you spent with us
